The Hot Dog Vendor - A Marketing Fable

This is the story of William the Wiener Guy, who built a great little business selling hot dogs from a stand on the edge of a busy intersection. He opened his stand six days a week and after only a few years he was able to purchase the land on which he had built his hot dog stand from the profits. During those years he continued to perfected his product, sourcing the plumpest wieners and just the right bun to compliment the meat. He only bought only the best brands of condiments and always made sure they were fresh . His customers always praised his dogs and William was very proud of his product!

The years passed and now it was time for his son to go to University. Because William ran his business so well his son would enjoy 4 years obtaining a Business Degree with all expenses paid by dad. One day a customer said to William, "Man you make the best Hot Dogs in town, you should put up a bigger sign so more people will see your stand and stop to enjoy one of these great dogs!"

William thought about this and decided to order a larger sign advertising his great Hot Dogs. It wasn't long after the sign went up that William had to hire two people to help him sell Hot Dogs, his business had increased by 25% in one week. At the end of that week William thought that if a bigger sign had increased his business what would a billboard advertising his business do to sales. So he arranged a billboard to be constructed on the next intersection

By the end of the next week he had had to hire 6 new employees to cope with the increase in business. And his business continued grow so he constructed an addition onto the stand to increase his seating capacity. With the extra cash he decided to sponsor a Little League baseball team, a soccer team and a basketball team. Every Saturday after these teams played, the Hot Dog stand was packed with kids and their families, so he hire 4 part time employees from the local high school to help with the Saturdays rush.

Just about this time, Williams' son return from College, having earned his degree in  Business. His son was horrified to see how much money his father had spent on signs and advertising and how many employees he now had to pay. Williams' son said "Dad what are you doing? don't you realize that there is a RECESSION taking place in this country?"

William reflected on his words and came to the conclusion that with his College degree his son must know what he is talking about. So the next day he canceled the Billboard, his sports team sponsorships, closed up his extra seating and laid off all his employees. His business immediately felt the impact of the RECESSION that his son had told him about and today he is content in fact that his son's education had paid off cause there was a RECESSION in this Country!

The moral of the story is . . . beware of Self Fulfilling Prophecies, they almost always come true!
